About Navman
Driven by innovation and expertise, Navman has grown from its humble beginnings in an Auckland garage to become a global pioneer in navigation technology.
Founded in 1986 by Peter Maire as Talon Technology, Peter established us as a pioneer in bespoke electronic products for the Marine market.
From there we expanded to become an original design manufacturer (ODM), adding chart plotters and fish-finders to our range of boating instruments, such as wind and depth gauges.
A clearer direction
In the 1990s, we changed our name to Navman. We took the name from one of the world’s first chart plotters, which were developed by a partner of ours in Europe.
Accompanying this name change was the realisation that GPS (global positioning system) would become a core part of our business.
As a result, we launched our first portable in-car navigation devices in 1997 and created sports performance measurement tools from 2004.
Alongside that growth into consumer markets, we also expanded into B2B markets with the launch of our Wireless Business Solutions group (now Vehicle Tracking Solutions) in mid-2000.
Leading technology
Navman has been at the forefront of technology ever since our earliest days in Auckland.
We created the first PDA-based in-car navigation device in 1997, our first wireless B2B products in 2001 and the first mass market dedicated portable in-car navigation device in 2003.
We also developed the world’s first integrated GPRS and GPS receiver enabling businesses to manage their fleet far more efficiently than ever before.
Continuing on our path of innovation, we also introduced our GPS technology to industries as diverse as mobile phones and construction.
Setting a new benchmark
In 2008, we launched the S-Series Platinum range of in-car navigation devices, introducing customers to the slimmest, most intelligent GPS on the market. The first with a superflat Glide Touchscreen, the S-Series Platinum range features superior guidance and comprehensive map data to continue leading the way in GPS technology.
Global growth
Navman’s has continued expand and our technology and solutions can now be found in products around the world in countries such as Chile, Denmark, Spain, the UK, and the USA to name a few.
